Project Overview

  • Project: Custom conference table with integrated hidden speaker lift
  • Lift Mechanism: FIRGELLI Column Lift System (Model: FA-SCL-650)
  • Control System: Wired or wireless remote with synchronized lift control - included
  • Hidden Item: Bluetooth speaker (Sonos Move used in this example)
  • Material: Solid walnut slab with powder-coated steel legs
  • Skill Level: Intermediate woodworking

Step 1: Choose the Right Lift Mechanism

For this project, the star of the show is the FIRGELLI Electric Column Lift. These ultra-quiet, vertically lifting actuators are perfect for creating hidden compartments in desks, cabinets, and tables. The model we used has a stroke of 39 inches and can lift up to 180 lbs—more than enough to elevate a speaker and supporting platform.

The FIRGELLI SCL column lift offers:

  • Smooth telescoping motion
  • Built-in limit switches
  • Integrated mounting plates
  • Plug-and-play wiring, just plug into a wall socket

Step 2: Design Your Tabletop

We used a 7-foot solid walnut slab, professionally flattened and finished in matte polyurethane for durability. The table includes a CNC-routed cutout in the center, sized to the speaker platform footprint (plus 0.25" clearance on all sides). The speaker rests on a metal tray mounted directly to the FIRGELLI lift platform.

Optional Add-On:

If you want to hide the platform completely, add a matching walnut “lid” on a hinge or sliding track that lifts with the speaker or retracts automatically using a second actuator.

Step 3: Build the Lift Enclosure

Underneath the table, you’ll need a steel or MDF enclosure to support the actuator and guide the lift column’s movement. Make sure the enclosure is:

  • Secured firmly to the table base
  • Aligned vertically with zero interference on the lift path
  • Well-ventilated to prevent overheating

Step 4: Wiring the FIRGELLI System

Non required, this is the best part of using a FIRGELLI Colul lift, in that it comes ready to plug into the wall. The Column Lift is controlled with a simple plug-in programmable controller with arrow up and down buttons as well as memory positions and a digital readout showing position. Simply press the button and watch the lift raise quietly and effortlessly. Using the programmable controller, you can set certain pre-determined heights. The optional wireless controller is available here

Step 5: Mount the Speaker

We used a Sonos Move speaker secured to a custom aluminum tray. The tray bolts to the mounting plate on the lift column using the FIRGELLI universal mounting bracket. Padding was added beneath the tray to dampen vibrations and ensure stable lift motion.

Ensure the speaker’s weight is evenly distributed, and its top is flush with the tabletop when retracted.

Step 6: Final Finishing and Testing

  • Test the lift operation with full extension and retraction
  • Ensure the enclosure remains silent and stable during lift
  • Make cable cutouts for speaker power or use battery-operated models
  • Apply final finish coat to the tabletop for aesthetics and durability

Why Use FIRGELLI?

Unlike many generic actuator suppliers, FIRGELLI offers unmatched reliability, customer service, and documentation. With over 20 years in the automation business, we support engineers, designers, and makers with rugged products, CAD models, and wiring guides.

More reasons to use FIRGELLI in your next lift project:
